Technique is not unusual or different, but how I picked colors I wanted to use was the key.

Here are a few of the backgrounds I made using Tim Holtz Distress Inks with the spritzing technique of water applied with the Distress spray bottle.

Paper used was from a pack of white grid paper from Project Life that I bought a very long time ago at a Michael's Craft Store.

So how did I pick my color combos? On Pintrest app you can search "color palette". It will automatically show choices of what is a picture of a scene, plant, or object accompanied by what look like paint chip samples. Designers probably use these for everything from creating fashion lines to decorating houses. The colors associated with the picture are pulled from colors that are in the picture itself. Apparently, there are apps that can do this custom for you. I haven't tried that yet.

But to get my Distress ink choices, I just picked a sample color palette I liked & pulled together the inks that to me most closely matched the example. I used my handy dandy chart that Ranger provides on their website to compare to the colors.

So, for example, my first attempt was from a color palette pulled from a picture of fig leaves.

The colors of Distress Inks were: Antique Linen, Milled Lavender, Iced Spruce, Bundled Sage, Tattered Rose, & Victorian Velvet.

Next was actually a close up of a rusty bike gear and chain.

Colors used: Fossilized Amber, Shabby Shutters, Evergreen Bough, Faded Jeans & Aged Mahogany.

I especially liked one palette pulled from a photo of exotic bird feathers!

Here's what I got:

I used Twisted Citroen, Hickory Smoke, Tumbled Glass, Brushed Corduroy, & Chipped Sapphire.

The next was inspired by tulips.

Using Twisted Citroen, Scattered Straw, Ripe Persimmon, Peeled Paint, Barn Door, & Dusty Concord.

Finally, last image I used this time was a rusty lock on an old purple door.
My palette turned out to be Hickory Smoke, Milled Lavender, Iced Spruce,Dusty Concord, & Tea Dye.

The inked papers can now be used as a background, a journal page, or even to die cut a shape to add to a project.

Color palettes are a great prompt to get to using colors of Distress you may love but don't use often. They're also a great starting point when you may be wanting to create a project but are not sure what look you should go for.
While I did not have all the supplies as used in class, I did some things with what I did have. One of the techniques looked a little familar to me! I had done something similar to it a few years ago. Here is a picture of a skeleton leaf card I made several years ago using stamps from www.stubbystampers.com

Trying out that technique again was fun, and what would my Creative Chemistry experience be without making something Halloweenie?

The technique I used differs from what was done in class. For my technique, I used Kromekote cardstock (from a stash I have been using gradually for believe it or not 10 years). My inks used are Color Box Fluid Chalk Inkpad in Bisque, and two Ranger alcohol inks in dark colors and Sunshine Yellow alcohol ink.

I first made my own stamp layout on a grid block using some various packs of Recollections brand Halloween stamps I had purchased over the years from Michaels craft stores.

Here is a picture of what my stamps all laid out on the grid block looked like.

Next, I inked that up with Color Box Chalk Bisque ink and stamped on the Kromekote. For best results I let the chalk ink dry somewhat. Since Kromekote is a treated paper with a very nice, shiny, slick surface, that takes a while.

When dry as it's going to get, I then applied the two shades of dark alcohol inks in the usual manner using a felt on the ink applicator. As soon as the paper was covered to my liking, I wiped over it with my cloth towel to bring out the images that had been stamped in Clearsnap Color Box Chalk. Normally, the Chalk ink dries with a soft finish. Since it is not soaking into the paper, wiping off defeats that effect, but does keep the paper beneath it from absorbing the colorant from the alcohol inks. I then spla shed a little Sunshine Yellow alcohol ink in areas to kind of colorize the Bisque areas to more of a warm orangy shade. The alcohol ink and blending solution does take a little time to dry on the Kromekote, so I was careful to wait until it looked dry before trimming it to the size I wanted.

I'll probably apply this to a card front and add some embellishments. But, the classroom gallery is closing soon, so I wanted to get at least this part of my experiment posted there.

Chock full of great techniques, even on just day 1, with several days to go. The classes are so well put together with not only PDFs to save or print of all the techniques, but lovely examples by guest artists, with additions like technique labels to print and stick to the back of the example tags we make for each technique. It is a learn at your own pace class, but going on live right now with Tim Holtz answering questions in the forum.

I know I won't be able to do a tag for every technique in just this week. (Raising more sweet foster kittens that are about ready to find homes.) But, I'm sure I'll eventually get to trying each of them out to see where it takes me.

Here's my tag for Day 1:

I used Kraft Resist paper from the Paper Stash collection to cut out my own tag. Using the technique described in class, I used Distress Inks and Distress Pens to stamp out stampers anonymous rubber cling stamps for my design. The great thing about this technique is Distress Ink colors that would not normally show up on a dark background are not only visible, but have a cool kind of extra dimension/depth.

I posted an ATC a while back that used a similar technique, only instead of inks, Pearl-ex and chalk were the colorant to stand out on the dark background. I think I like using the inks better as it is not as time consuming or messy as the Pearl-ex and chalks were both powders.

Off to look at class videos for Day 2!

Thanks for checking out my tag.
After reviewing the techniques from the original Creative Chemistry 101 class, I decided to do something a little different.

A while back I had made my own stencils using some of the die cuts I had purchased. For this tag, I used the flower shapes I had from cutting Tattered Floral die cut out of stencil material.

I used a tag I had out of my stash of ones I make while trying out different techniques. I learned there is no reason to throw out one you may not like very much, because it can always become a background, under layer, or just die cut a section you do like to use as an embellishment. The technique I had originally used on this particular tag was one from the Distress Crayons Kit I had purchased at Michaels. Above you see the blue flowers that are cut from the stencil material.

I tacked them down to the tag with a little removable double-stick tape to hold them in place. Using Archival Distress Black Soot Ink (also from the Distress Crayons Kit), I then covered the tag with black ink. Using a mask to ink a solid darker color over bright background colors is sometimes called Joseph's Coat technique.

It looked something like the above (pretty ugly), until I then removed the stencil material and...

kind of like magic I have the shapes of the flowers. To bring them more into the foreground of the tag, I used Gellyroll glitter pens to edge around each flower.

I used an Idea-ology Gumdrop as the center for each flower, adheared with Ranger Glossy Accents, and also edged the tag with a see-through ribbon.
I did the Perfect Splatter Distress technique which uses Distress Inks with Perfect Pearls powders.

Since every time you do this technique it will be different, I made several tags at the same sitting so I would have a choice of what background to use for my challenge piece.

Here's a picture of the three tags I ended up with:

I had recently gotten some of the newer Distress Inks colors and used Fossilized Amber, Twisted Citron, Mermaid Lagoon, Abandoned Coral, and Wilted Violet along with Heirloom Gold Perfect Pearls on two of the tags, and Blue Patina on the center tag.

Here is a closeup of the Perfect Pearls as it is usually hard to see shiny finishes on computer or phone screens.

Since the backgrounds ended up being so colorful and busy, I decided to add just a few simple additions so as not to take away from all that inky goodness.

Just stamped the phrase from Stampers Anonymous Layering Stamp and Stencil set in Ranger black Archival ink, added a shiny metal dragonfly embellishment on a popdot, silver braided ribbon, and a small strip of the Industrious metal stickers from Tim Holtz idea-ology line.

My tag incorporates the marbled stains technique, along with vellum.

Marbled background used the colors Milled Lavender, Dried Marigold, Tarnished Brass, and Picket Fence.

I used some of the Tim Holtz vellum, by coating the back of the vellum with Picket Fence as well. Other colors of Distress Stains will also show through the vellum and change up the color slightly. The Picket Fence on the preprinted vellum just makes the colors already printed on it look brighter.

I tore and crumpled the vellum, gluing to bottom of tag with Claudine Helmuth Studio Extra Time Slow Dry Medium. I also cut out a piece of crumpled vellum with an oval die cut, using the smaller size die cut with regular white cardstock for stamping the butterfly, edged with Rusty Hinge Distress Ink.

I added two sizes of diamond pattern stamps from Tim Holtz Stamper's Anonymous in Milled Lavender and Victorian Velvet Distress Ink to the background to add extra interest.

The ribbon is a Martha Stewart self-stick ribbon from Michael's stores.
How awesome is that!

He issued a challenge to use 4 colors of Distress Inks with some of the techniques in the first week of Creative Chemistry 101 techniques. Here is my tag using Brushless Watercolor Technique, as well as Blended Distress, Spritz and Flick techniques.

Stamps used are from the Stampers Anonymous Tim Holtz Visual Artistry sets of vinyl stamps that were available at Michaels stores.
I didn't have die cuts that would work for these techniques, so I had to dust off my Cricut mini and use some images from cartridges I had purchased.

A little bit about Cricut Mini:

I originally got the Mini because I thought eventually Cricut would have to go to selling individual data files for a smaller price than the hefty amount of entire cartridges (and I was right!). I wasn't really into die cutting much at the time, but I could see the potential. I don't use it that much, but in cases where I just don't have a die cut shape that works, I've been able to find something on the Cricut Craft Room that I like.

Since I hadn't used it in a while, both the Craft Room software and Adobe Air needed to be updated. That is something to always check for as soon as you have the machine hooked up, turned on, and the Craft Room open. It slipped my mind and cost me about an hour's delay trying to figure out why the images I had selected and put on the mat wouldn't cut. After updating and restarting computer, everything worked fine.

Another tip I have found is if the sticky stuff on your mat is not working 100%, just tape around the edges of your paper with blue painter's tape. It will usually peel off easily. Once I tape it down, I put the mat on a flat surface and rub all over the surface of the paper to try to warm up the sticky mat so paper will adhere. I have done this with success, but also keep an eye on my cutting so if the paper slips I can hit the stop button on screen to quit before anything gets jammed or damaged.

I have seen videos of how to restick your mat, but again don't use it so often that I have ever tried that. For someone who plans on using it alot, investing in the glue remover and sticky spray to restick a mat is probably a good idea.

I definitely think steel rule dies and the other thin dies you can get from other companies are easier to use, less fuss, and don't require extras (like buying new blades and mats). But, the attraction I think of Cricut is how many different images you can get with one single cartridge. I know people who have multiple Cricut machine versions and don't quite get that. I try to conserve space (and money) by really investigating what a machine can do before I purchase.

Now to the tag:

Rather than manila tag material, I cut my bottom layer out of a Tim Holtz cardstock, the middle layer out of a patterned paper and the top layer out of Grunge paper. Since all these will be sealed with a gesso, it did not really have to be out of manila stock. I just was careful to use a small amount of gesso without getting everything soaking wet.

Instead of the cardboard top tag to emmulate a wood surface, I went with cutting a matching layer of tag out of Grunge paper. I changed out the blade in my machine for a Deep Cut blade housing. I taped the Grunge paper down to the mat really well around the edges. Settings for the cut were 5 for pressure, 6 for depth, and 2 (slow) for speed.

Tag once gessoe and Watercolor Crayons applied. I actually like the way this looked too much to cover it up. So I made a second tag using the same method so I could apply the Grunge board tag over it. I'm saving this one for something else.

I had purchased the Distress Crayon Watercolor Kit that is a great buy for what it has. It contains a pack of Distress Watercolor Crayons (6), brush, set of gorgeous clear vinyl stamps, a block for the stamps, Distress Black Soot Archival small ink pad, and two packs of Ranger Watercolor paper. It also has a booklet that shows techniques.

Using one of the techniques within the booklet, I used the butterfly shapes that were cut from Grunge board, coated with white gesso, and smeared with Watercolor Crayon. I then used a Tim Holtz stencil over the butterfly to remove some of the Watercolor Crayon so the white gesso shows through in a pattern. I also decided my background butterflies were a little too dark, so used the same technique on them.

Recollections brand also has Watercolor crayon. Although I like the Ranger colors better, this other brand contains some kind of glimmery additive that leaves a sparkle when dry. I thought that was appropriate for butterflies, so I used both kinds of Watercolor Crayon together.

I used idea-ology rub-on words for the phrase I applied to the butterfly. The two butterflies are attached to the Grunge board surface with Ranger Glossy Accents. Three gold brads and a gold braid finish off the tag.
For the February tag, I didn't want to go with the traditional Valentine kind of love theme. I followed the techniques and format of timholtz.com and started off with the picture of the boy with his dog that comes from preprinted 12 x 12 Lost and Found Paper Stash from idea-ology.

Doing an internet search for "dog sayings", this one (Be the person your dog thinks you are) jumped right out at me and off I went.

The manila tag was first inked direct-to-paper with Faded Blue Jeans Distress ink.

Once dry, Memories Mists (by Superior) in Whipped Cream color sprayed through the stencil created the pattern. Note that although it is a white spray, it turns to a subtle blue as it activates the Distress ink and seems to absorb some of the color. I like the effect as is looks very soft rather than being a harsh white color.

Once dry, Tea Stain Distress was inked through a polka dot stencil in the upper right and lower left corners and around the edges of the entire tag.

The saying is a combination of idea-ology Chit Chat words, some rub on letters, idea-ology rub ons and the plastic self stick letters from idea-ology called Alpha Parts; Ransom. Picket Fence Distress Paint changed the surface color of the Alpha Parts from black to white.

Stencils with Ranger Texture paste was used to add the small hearts at upper left corner and the accent next to the saying and this was topped with embossing powder.

I added some subtle color to the picture of the boy and his dog by coloring his hat, tie, and the dog's darker markings with Antique Linen Distress marker. This was then adheared to a background paper using clear photo corners and embellished with a bone-shaped paper clip to which I added a tiny ribbon bow. The photo is mounted to the tag using pop dots.

Tip: When using the texture paste, I took a little too long to pour on the embossing powder. Some areas of the paste had dried, so the powder wouldn't stick in place. I used a small paint brush to apply Ranger embossing ink in the dab top dispenser to the void areas where the embossing powder did not stick and heated it to melt.

I made it using two coordinating preprinted papers. This design element stamp #3354 stamped out three times on preprinted paper in two shades of Colorbox Fluid Chalk ink was cut into three layers. I then applied Ranger Stardust Stickles to each layer, before applying popdots between layers to give it a dimensional look. The final topper is a pearl brad.

When I adheared it to the paper, I did place small popdots under each "leaf" of that layer to keep it raised. I also curled the paper slightly over a brush handle so it would stay raised up from the background paper, giving it more dimension.

A second design element stamp #4039 was stamped in Yellow Ochre Colorbox Fluid Chalk ink on the pre-printed background.

I cut a strip of coordinating paper for the border and also added some pearl cobachons over a row of what is actually a line of green dots on the paper. I didn't really like the green, and it gave me a guideline for the spacing of the pearls with zero measuring on my part! Gotta love that.

Hope the recipient enjoyed getting it as much as I enjoyed making it!

The church supplied the boxes, which were supposed to be decorated, filled, and returned to be distributed.

I did a diecut in a pearlized paper, topped it with an oval diecut to which I had adheared some silver metal-looking stickers that are on a vellum paper. In the picture, the vellum appears white, but IRL it was really see-thru once mounted to the paper. I used a metal sticker for the silver lines on either side of the center which extends around the corners of the box. At each end of the metal sticker, I used a silver plastic self-stick cobachon.

The back looked like this:

And each side had the same silver Christmas tree sticker applied:

Thought it was a pretty and quick way to add something to an otherwise plain, red box.

A fun project and worthwhile one that hopefully made some people smile at Christmas time.pmstamperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06306152570103159458noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3772838770066541399.post-30422287242770606062016-01-10T06:53:00.000-08:002016-01-10T06:53:12.159-08:00January - 12 Tags of 2016CHA is currently going on in Anaheim, CA. I've been watching lots of Periscope live broadcasts from the showroom floor and checking out the Facebook and Twitter pages of companies with brands that I like. All the creativity in the videos and excitement about new products actually prompted me to create something! Here's my January tag using the techniques from timholtz.com 12 Tags of 2016.

I do the two techniques just a little differently than as shown on timholtz.com

For the metal look technique, I use metal tape from the hardware store. If you notice, I embossed with two different folders. One is a gear pattern and the other, Eiffel Tower, is from Sizzix Alterations Texture Fades. I used just the portion of that folder with the postal cancellation.

After embossing, I apply Denim and Mushroom alcohol inks to the embossed metal tape. It makes a subtle difference and here's a photo of how it looks with just the alcohol inks applied.

The tag on the left has the alcohol inks, while the tag on the right is just the embossed metal tape. Once you then apply the final step of Black Soot Distress paint, you can still see the other colors. I find it looks even more like real aged metal with those two other colors showing through.

For the chalk look, I don't have the same materials available. I used Tsukineko Moonlight White Brilliance ink and actual chalk. Once I stamped the clock image from Hampton Art, in the Brilliance ink, using a paint brush I dusted white chalk powder over it. I then also dusted a little purple chalk powder as well. I used a piece of fleece fabric to burnish the chalk into the ink and wipe away the excess.

I glued down my embellishments with Ranger Glossy Accents. I also used idea-ology Deco sheet in silver to cover the middle section of the manila tag.

I noticed when looking at my blog posts from last year, they stop abruptly at March 2015. Here are the two little reasons I didn't have any time for stamping:

I found these little guys back in April 2015 abandoned by a feral cat a friend of mine was feeding. Fortunately, I had experience raising kittens and now these little guys aren't so little and look like this:

Instead of using the paste technique, however, I used a Dylusions stencil by inking through it and then embossing with gold embossing powder. I did try the paste technique, but didn't particularly like the very chunky look with what I was making. I particularly did like how the fine line stamping looks a little faded, as to me, that contributes to the dream-like quality in the saying on the metal word band used.
New owners, who I have known for years, recently took over the company to keep all their wonderful images available and revitalize the company with new stamps to come from Jambalayas Stubby Stampers.

I am helping out by doing some samples for stamps that they have available on the website, to maybe inspire some ideas of just some of the great things you can make with them. Below is a card using their "Friend" stamp #3897, found here: http://www.stubbystampers.com/shopping/stamps/messages/friendship.html

I made this card using a nifty technique with embossing folders, diecuts, and some embellishments. Using a piece of white cardstock, I first inked my embossing folder on the side where the images are recessed, placed the paper in, and then passed it through embossing machine. Because I used a blue ink, I then had a piece of paper that was blue background with raised white flowers. I then colored each of the flowers with markers to get the yellow flowers with green stems and petals.

Using a circular die cut, I then positioned that over my embossed and colored paper, and cut an opening. I cut two more smaller circles (one dark blue, and one light blue). I stamped and heat embossed the word "Friend" on the lighter circle. I then layered first the light blue (on a popdot) onto the dark blue. I glued my background embossed paper onto a light blue rectangle, glued down the dark blue circle, and then glued this down to the dark blue base card. I used a brown plaid ribbon and some flower-shaped Raindot stickers from Cloud9 Design as embellishment.

Thanks for looking at my creation. Check out Jambalayas Stubby Stamps website and Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/stubbystampers for more samples of cards made by some very talented stampers.

These are great because not only does he share great techniques for products that already exist, but shows eveyone fantastic ways to use his new products.

I, once again, will be trying to use mostly things I already have. Of course, I watched videos and saw blog posts of the new CHA 2015 releases and can't resist all the new things that were announced. So, I am sure will be getting at least a few of them in the year to come. Love that Ranger is releasing a new color of Distress Inks in all mediums monthly so that it affordable to order the mediums you prefer to use the most.

Here is my take on the January 2015 tag.

I used Melange Tissue Wrap glued to a manilla tag for my background. I avoided gluing down the edges so that I could substantially tear them away once the tag was dry. Rather than coating my whole tag with a medium, I preferred to leave as is after painting wrap with Salty Ocean and Seedless Preserves Distress Paint. I used a product called Wonder Wash to apply speckles of silver shimmer to the background (hard to see in photo). I used three sayings I cut from Words Remnant Rubs sheet at the top of tag. The numbers are Grungeboard coated with Platinum Stickles. The "0" is a spiral paper clip embellished with various color seed beads. Finally, added the metal word band and stained the Crinkle ribbon with Broken China and Dusty Concord Distress Stain.

Thanks for looking at my post and all comments are appreciated!
I had in mind a little plan for some ever since I heard it was out there and available. A little fabric, a ho-hum computer chair and about 30 minutes of time and in the spirit of reduce, reuse, and recycle...

my very own custom chair for my stamping work area. The great thing is that even though I am using inks, sprays, paints and other things that can stain, the chair can easily be changed to a different fabric. This is actually the second time I have re-covered it. As long as it stays in working order and is "cushy" I will keep refreshing it rather than spending alot more for a brand new chair.
It's my first time at trying something for Simon Says Stamp, so hope it fits the challenge.

For my focal point, I embossed the car (Sizzix Alterations Texture Trade size) on Core'dinations Kraft-Core paper and sanded it. Sanding flattens the image, so to make it feel raised from the paper, I replaced it into the folder and embossed a second time. I mounted this with brads onto a piece of manila tag that I had done in a background technique from Tim Holtz's blog that uses Washi tapes, Distress Paints, and Distress Inks. For anyone who has wondered what to do with tags they have tried techniques on, but don't really like the whole thing...cutting it up or running it through a die-cut to get a shape out of it for future use is a great way to be able to use that one section of the tag that you actually did like!

I selected my metal file folder tab from the Tim Holtz Idea-ology file tabs set and put it together using the "everyday" word sticker. Then using foam dots, this was placed on top of another piece of the Kraft-Core that had been sanded.

The background paper is from We R Memory Keepers 6 x 6 Anthologie Paper Pad. I cut that paper to size. I used Tim Holtz Stampers Anonymous Shabby Stripes stamp in Lemonade Distress Ink to stamp it four times with the rays going outward from the area I planned to mount my focal point. I then inked the paper further with Wild Honey, Vintage Photo, and finally Walnut Stain Distress Inks.

I then selected rub-on words from Tim Holtz Idea-ology Remnant Rubs Life quotes to make my own saying for the card, that reads "The Journey is in progress". Along with the word "everyday" on the file tab, it reads "The Journey is in progress, every day." Here is what that background paper looked like before I added my focal point to it.

I attached the focal point to this and adhered this all to a 5 x 7 inch ivory card. Below the background paper, I further used pieces of the manila tag and the sanded blue Kraft-Core in an alternating pattern of varying sizes. I wanted it a little uneven and block-y just because I kind of liked it that way. I then covered the longest edge where the papers meet with tan and black rick rack trim.
Thanks for looking! I had so much fun making my entry and will be trying to participate in more blog challenges in the future.
The way swaps work is you make a certain number of an item (usually one for every participant), mail it to the hostess, the hostess swaps out all the items so that each participant gets one of each person's creations, and mails it back to you. So, I made 12 tags and will be getting back 11 other tags that other people made for the various holidays throughout the 12 months of the year, plus the one I made for myself of course.
I stamped the diamond pattern in China Blue Distress Paint, and then the dotted line pattern over it twice, once in Picket Fence Distress Paint, and then in Chipped Sapphire Distress Paint. I love how that paint dries opaque and leaves virtually no rough texture to the paper. You run your finger over the paper and you can't feel any rough texture to suggest that paint was applied. The tag and embossed die cut were edged with Vintage Photo Distress ink, the die cut is mounted on pop-dots and I added the argyle ribbon and three Rain Dots under the word "dad".
This one took me a while as I was trying to make every item fit in with the theme I picked...Alice in Wonderland. I used the techniques as described on Tim Holtz's blog, but added some details of my own. I didn't have a Shadowpress embossing folder, so once I had the quote from Alice in Wonderland arranged to my liking in a word processing program, I ran a sheet of preprinted paper through my printer. I then glued all the papers and charms I had gathered together onto a tag that I did using the Distress background technique. I used Ranger's Glossy Accents as it works on metal, paper, and plastic as well.

I did this ATC for my stamp club get together shortly after the Chalkboard technique for February tag. The theme for swap was cats. I really liked the simplicity of using the Moonlight White Tsuneko ink on black cardstock and then dusting a dry color over it to get whatever color you like to show up against a black background! If you try just stamping a nonopaque ink onto black, you will see that it just won't show up at all and even some opaque colors don't show up well on black.

I cut black cardstock into 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 inch rectangles because I wanted to diecut them and mount on 2 1/2 x 3 1/4 inch purple cardstock to get the ATC size. Next I stamped a portion of the block pattern from Tim Holtz Stampers Anonymous Grunge Cirque cling set in Moonlight white. Using a brush, I dusted some green chalk from a chalk watercolor set over the ink. I let it dry for a minute or two and then rubbed over the image with a piece of flannel just to pick up extra dust and burnish the color down slightly. Using that same method and letting it dry between each step, I stamped the cat (Inkadinkado clear stamps Cat set) in Moonlight White. I used Pearl-ex this time in blue to dust over cat. I stamped the "You're Purrfect" from a Studio G clear stamp set and then used a gold Pearl-ex to color that.

I then sent the rectangular cardstock through a Cuttlebug and diecut the shape and embossed the edge. Because there was an embossed edge involved, I did not want to diecut first as that might leave a void area where the ink from the image does not completely contact the paper.

My resulting image is a combination of matte (chalk watercolor), and shimmery (Pearl-ex powder) which I think adds some interest to the card.

The little flower decoration is actually three stacked flowers from a jar of Recollections Floral Embellishments. I glued two large flowers and one small one for center. The center rhinestone is a mini-rhinestone that comes from a nail art pack you can find in almost any drugstore by the nail polishes. Those little rhinestones are just the right size to add some bling to an ATC.

This is my tag for the March 12 Tags of 2014 Challenge. I used some of the techniques as on timholtz.com. I wanted it actually to look a little unfinished, stark, and kind of neglected, as that is what the verse from the Song of Solomon 1:6 means to me. You can't tell it well from the picture, but the stamped image of the woman (I think from Great Impressions) is covered with a piece of idea-ology Frosted Film. That gave it an all-over shimmer, without having to do any coloring. (Did I mention I love color, but really don't like coloring much?)

I first stamped the main image, then masked it so I could use a stencil I cut on my Cricut to make the background, stamp the swirl image and the border (http://www.stubbystampers.com/shopping/stamps/design/borders.html #3581). This made them look like they were behind the stamped image.

Below the border is a scrap of Core'dinations I had left over from another project. It was embossed with embossing folder and then sanded. I tied a piece of cording around the tag. The text is printed out onto a sand-colored cardstock and inked with Corduroy Distress Ink, affixed using Tiny Attachers. The ribbon is the Tim Holtz idea-ology Linen Ribbon that I spread apart and frayed the edges by hand to make them look disarrayed. (Again, on purpose.)

This tag was inspired from a feeling of doing everything for everyone else, while not paying attention to the things I needed to do for myself. Thankfully, since then, I have turned that around.pmstamperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06306152570103159458noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3772838770066541399.post-26942067154062771572014-02-26T13:22:00.000-08:002014-02-26T13:22:00.519-08:00February 12 Tags of 2014, Chalkboard Stamping Technique

Here is my February tag for 12 Tags of 2014. I used similar techniques to those on timholtz.com. I stenciled my background in three colors of Ranger Distress Inks (Milled Lavender, Seedless Preserves, and Dusty Concord) through the Stripes stencil from the Tim Holtz stampersanonymous.com collection onto a white tag. Once I had finished, it sort of reminded me of the look of pillow ticking fabric.

The saying is Tim Holtz stampersanonymous Phrases 1 set. Rather than using the technique given (since I did not have that particular embossing powder), I tried several different ways of making it look like chalkboard writing. The one that worked best for me was using Tsukineko Moonlight White Brilliance Ink.

Using that ink, first I stamped image on regular black cardstock. Brilliance is line of fast-drying pigment inks, so I had a brush and my chalk handy. I ran the brush over the chalk to pick up some of the powder and brushed lightly over the ink to avoid smearing. Final step was to let it dry for a minute or two, then burnish lightly with a piece of winter fleece fabric.

A stamping friend of mine had shown me that you can use Versamark ink to stamp, brush Pearl-ex powder over it, and burnish with the fleece to get a metallic looking finish to your stamped image. So, I thought I would give the same technique a try with Brilliance ink and the chalk powder and I think it worked well for the chalkboard look.

I cut and mounted the saying onto a piece of white cardstock that was colored using the Dusty Concord Distress Ink, then frayed the edges using the Tim Holtz Tonic Studios Paper Distresser.

The stars are Grungeboard coated with glitter using the same technique as on timholtz.com.

I glued two fabric ribbons on bottom of tag and used one of the same ribbons as my tag topper.

Was able to make a tag to participate in the 12 Tags of 2014 on timholtz.com. My tag uses most of the same techniques as shown on that site.

I used Idea-ology Mini Mask on large tag for scroll shape seen on top and bottom.

I used rub-ons for the fancy swirl in the upper right corner.

I printed the saying I found on the internet onto Vellum paper and cut out, attaching to tag with Tiny Attacher staples. Saying is a quote from Mary Pickford (silent film star of years gone by and cofounder of United Artists studio) - "You may have a fresh start any moment you choose. For this thing we call 'failure' is not the falling down, but the staying down." Thought that was a good thing to remember this new year.

I used a Tim Holtz Sizzix Alterations embossing folder for my ticket shape. I embossed it on
Grungeboard, cut it out, and then also cut out the area that says Admit One using Exacto knife. I used foil tape on Grungeboard to emboss it a second time, cutting out the Admit One shape and substituting that when I glued tag down.

A tip for detailing: I colored my Tiny Attacher staples with black alcohol ink.pmstamperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06306152570103159458noreply@blogger.com4
